Straight up – we all need to get seriously self-aware.
My questions is – do you really understand yourself? Do you know what makes you tick – from your subconscious conditioning, to your conscious thinking? What really makes your heart and soul sing? Why do you behave the way you do? Why do some things upset you, or strike fear in you, whilst other things do the opposite? Do you know why certain things in life just don’t seem to work out for you?
When you’re not sure of the answer to these questions, you tend to live your life on autopilot. Now as with everything I ever talk about, if you’re happy as you are then that’s cool – crack on!
But if you feel like things could be better, then consider it in this way: if you wanted to play a new instrument, you need to learn all about that instrument and practise with it, in order to create beautiful music. So think of yourself as the instrument and your life as the music.
Do you know how to play yourself?!
Learning about your psychology, your emotions, thoughts, behaviours, your soul, your instincts and your intuition – all the multiple dimensions that make us human, will give you valuable knowledge that you can use to be the best you can be.
So take some time each day – observe yourself, don’t judge, but just watch – see what you do, hear what you say, hear what you think, and really feel what you feel. Be present with yourself.
Another thing I do is I question everything. When I feel, think or do something that isn’t positive or beneficial in my life I’ll question myself – why? What is it in me, that is making me perceive the situation in this way or behave in this manner – because at the end of the day, everything really does start and end with you.
There’s a lot of information out there to help us understand ourselves psychologically, emotionally and spiritually. Decades of conditioning and life experience is within us, most of it we’ve gained unconsciously and are not aware of. Unfortunately we don’t get taught at school how to understand all of that and it’s such a massive part of our lives – it IS our lives!
If we could pay as much attention to ourselves as we do to other people, I reckon the world would be a much richer place. So I hope you find the time that you deserve to focus on yourself. Only you can play the music of your life, so learn to play the instrument.
